Your child should visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive. Your child should be informed of the visit and told that the dentist and her staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. Do not "over-prepare" your child.  Too much information will increase anxiety and apprehension about the appointment (particularly if YOU are apprehensive).  The less to-do concerning the visit, the better.

It is best if you refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, pull, drill or hurt. Pediatric dental offices make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.  Do not be alarmed or concerned if your young child cries or resists their first examination.  This is a normal reaction to a new environment, and our staff is experienced in dealing with this behavior.  Very young children can often be examined in the lap of a parent, or with the parent next to the child in the dental chair.

Children age four-years-old and up will receive necessary x-rays.  X-rays are a vital part of your child's examination, and allow a thorough and complete diagnosis to be made.  During this time, you will be asked to wait in the waiting room.  For this reason, please do not promise your child that you will be with them the entire appointment, as this is not possible during the x-rays.  In fact, some children cooperate better without the parent in the room.  They are often just "testing the system", and do much better on their own, and are immensely proud of themselves afterwards.  

Each child will receive a new toothbrush with a travel cover, toothpaste sample, a sticker and a prize at their first visit.
